How to Care for Peonies: Tips from Our Floral Studio

Peonies — timeless, lush, and beloved — are among the most requested flowers at Maison d’Fleur, especially during spring and early summer. Their romantic blooms bring elegance to any space, but they require just a bit of special attention to keep them looking their best. Here are our studio’s top tips for caring for peonies at home:

1. Choose Fresh Peonies at the Right Stage

Peonies bloom in stages. If you want to enjoy their full life at home, choose blooms that are still in “marshmallow stage” — soft, round buds that haven’t fully opened. Within a day or two in water, they’ll unfurl into large, fragrant blossoms.

2. Use a Clean Vase & Fresh Water

Always start with a thoroughly cleaned vase to avoid bacterial buildup. Fill it with fresh, cool water and add flower food if provided. Change the water every 1–2 days for best results.

3. Trim the Stems Properly

Upon arrival (or when refreshing your bouquet), trim each stem at a 45-degree angle under running water. This improves water intake and helps the peonies stay hydrated longer.

4. Remove Lower Leaves

Strip any leaves that fall below the waterline. Submerged foliage encourages bacteria growth, which can shorten the life of your flowers.

5. Keep Peonies Cool

Peonies are sensitive to heat. Keep them out of direct sunlight, away from heating vents or appliances, and avoid placing them near fruit — which releases ethylene gas that accelerates wilting.

6. Let Them Breathe

Peonies are lush and full — don’t overcrowd them in a vase. Give each stem room to open fully and breathe.

7. Want Them to Open Faster?

If your peonies are still tight and you need them open for a special moment, place them in warm water in a well-lit (but not hot) room. You can also gently massage the outer petals to encourage blooming — just be gentle!

Extra Tip from Our Designers:

If you’re saving your peonies for an event, you can store them in the fridge overnight (wrapped in paper or in water). Just don’t keep them next to fruit or vegetables!

Peonies may be fleeting, but with the right care, they’ll bloom beautifully and bring joy to your home for up to a week — sometimes more. At Maison d’Fleur, we source only premium peonies at peak freshness to ensure you experience their full magic.
